John Henry's Story.
Birkenhead News 10 November 1915Tranmere Soldier’s Death
AT ALEXANDRIA.
Sad news by cable from Alexandria, just to hand, records the death of Lance-Corpl. John H. Burns, late of E Company (Tranmere), 4th Battn. Cheshire Regiment, Territorial Force. Private Burns (as he was then) was called to the colours at mobilisation, and left for the Dardanelles in July and since the anxious time reported of the landing of his Battalion on the Gallipoli Peninsula several cheery letters have been received from him. His parents having passed away when he was of tender years, his uncle, the late Mr. Robert W. Burns and Mrs. Burns of 1, Stuart Road, Higher Tranmere, adopted him. He was also a nephew of Mr. John H. Burns, “Lyncairn,” Prenton Road East. Educated at the Birkenhead Institute, he was a great favourite with his colleagues, and the pity of it is that the brilliant career which seemed assured, should have been cut so short. A consolation, however, is that he has died in his country’s cause.
