Arthur's Story.

Arthur is believed to have been born in Halifax but, by the time of the 1901 Census, was living in Stockport where he worked as a showman. Family information suggests that he was a bareback horse rider in a circus. Arthur was married to Alice and they lived at 6 St Mary's Gate, Stockport. They had five children. The oldest was 9 and the youngest only one month. Arthur probably never saw his youngest child. He carried on trade as a general dealer. Arthur had been a regular soldier for 8 or 9 years, serving with the Royal Field Artillery. He was still a reservist and was mobilised when war was declared in August 1914. He served again with the RFA, (service number 36924), but this is probably only until December 1914 when the Cheshires returned from India.  He was killed at the Battle of Loos. After the war, Alice Bowen was living at 4 Barke's Buildings, Churchgate, Stockport.
