Arnold's Story.

Born Nantwich, August 7, 1894. Son of Doctor Frank Edward and Ethel Mathews of Welsh Row House, Nantwich. Educated at Nantwich & Acton Grammar and Shrewsbury Schools and graduated to Cambridge, where he was a prominent long distance runner. First enlisted in “D” Company, 5th (Service) Bn. K.S.L.I. in September 1914. Received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the 14th Bn. Cheshire Regiment on October 20, 1914 and was promoted to Lieutenant the following December. Wounded in the head at Sanna-i-yat and died at Orah, on the Tigris, five days later in the 19th British Field Ambulance. Mentioned in Sir Percy Lake’s despatches (‘The London Gazette’ - October 19, 1916) for gallant service.
