Birkenhead News 26 October 1918Killed by Shell.
News has been received that Driver H. Almond, of 23, Gladstone Street, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Almond, was killed in action on October 12th. He joined the R.F.A. at the outbreak of war, and had seen three and a half years’ service in France. In 1917 he was wounded, and before returning to France he was transferred to a Highland regiment. His officer writes :- “On the day in question, he was holding mine and another officer’s horses when a shell burst, killing himself and the horses. Beyond having thus given his life for his King and country, he was the means of saving the lives of eighteen men who were in a group behind, and would have all been killed but for bearing the brunt of the burst. Private Almond was, prior to the outbreak of war, employed as a carter by Perrins, team owners. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss.
