John George's Story.

John’s inscription on the Stockport War Memorial is spelt wrongly as Allsop. All military records spell it as above, including the name of his father, George Frank Allsopp, as recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The Commission records the family home as being as being 11 Toronto Road. Nothing is known of John’s life except that army records published after the War show he was born in Stockport and enlisted in the town. 265th Brigade was a Territorial unit of the Artillery and John’s original service number, 1508, suggests that if he was not a prewar Territorial, then he joined up soon after war was declared in August 1914. John died of natural causes, possibly a victim of the “Spanish Flu” pandemic which claimed millions of lives worldwide in the autumn of 1918.
