Charles James William's Story.
Charles’s name came up when checking for “Fallen” lads on the Commonwealth War Graves database just using Weaverham under additional information. A remarriage by his wife had brought Charles’s name to Weaverham as recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Weaverham St. Mary's "Roll of Honour" and the "Fallen" Memorial does not include any lads named Bunn.
C.W.G.C. - remember Charles at the Basra Memorial on Panels 37 & 64. Charles was with the 1st Bn. Manchester Regiment, Private, No. 2257. The date of his death was Wednesday 8th March 1916. Husband of Minnie Barber (formerly Bunn) 14 Heath Road, Owley Wood, Weaverham.
Freebmd confirms Charles J. W. Bunn had married Minnie Ashton in 1913 at Barton I., Barton upon Irwell.(Freebmd records 2 children, Horace L. Bunn born 1913 and Eliza J. A. Bunn born 1915 Barton I.) After Charles’s death Minnie Bunn had then gone onto marry Fred Barber at Barton I. in Dec. 1917. At sometime before the Commonwealth War Graves Commission completed their work Minnie Barber came to live in Weaverham.
Where in the UK is Charles remembered? Carls Cam website does not appear to list a Charles J. W. Bunn! There is a WW1 memorial in the Churchyard (St. Catherine) at Barton-upon-Irwell which is so badly worn the names are unreadable. The Trafford War Dead website does not list any lads named Bunn. Another website salfordwarmemorials does provide a list of names for this specific memorial. Charles is not listed.
N.A.M.C. - have a card for Charles, the card states he was with the 2nd Bn. Manchester Regiment, No 2257. Charles was awarded the Victory, British and 15 Star medals, The Theatre of War is not stated, his Date of Entry 27th March 1915
