“The Few that Remain.”

PATHETIC MESSAGE TO BEREAVED BIRKENHEAD MOTHER.

In a recent issue of the “News” we reported that Corporal Charles Hands, of the 2nd Cheshire Regiment, had been missing since May 8th. Since then his mother, who resides at 47, Flamanck Street, has received a letter from one of her son’s comrades, who had served with him in India, in which he says :- “I very much regret to send you the sad news of the death of your son, Corporal Charles Hands, who was killed by a shell on the 8th May. The few that remain of us miss him very much. He was well respected by every one of us, and he was the life of the company. We all send our deepest sympathy with Mrs. Hands in her great loss.”

As yet Mrs. Hands has received no official intimation of the death of her son, and she, with all Corporal Hand’s friends, are hoping against hope that he may yet be alive and spared to come home again.
