Peter Allen's Story.

Christ Church WW1 memorial records an Allen Gates with the East Lancashire Regiment. The C.W.G.C. remember a Peter Allen Gates.

The following members and ex-members of Barnton Brass Band have enlisted in different regiments of Kitcheners Army: Joseph Coombes (Hon. Sec.) Edward Rogers, William Leicester, Bert Leicester, Richard Garnett, William Racster, Walter Leonard, Ernest Lightfoot, Henry Leicester and Allen Gates. (Racster, a rare name, N.A.M.C. have just one medal card for a lad with the surname Racster and he has the Christian name William.)

C.W.G.C. remember a Peter Allen Gates, Pte., with the East Lancashire Regiment, No 13154, died 26th July 1916 aged 25, at the Wimereux Communal Cemetery (l.O.26.) France. Son of Hiram E. and Alice Gates of Barnton, Nr. Northwich, Cheshire with the Personal Inscription Not gone from memory on (or) from love but gone to his heavenly home above.

N.A.M.C. have over 1000 medal cards for lads/lasses named Gates including a Peter A. Gates with the 1st East Lancashire Regiment No 13154, awarded 15 Star, British and Victory medals, T.o.W. (1) France, D.o.E. 18,?.15. It is noted on the medal card, D.o.W. (Died of Wounds) 26.7.16.

Cheshirebmd records the birth of a Peter A. Gates in 1891 Weaverham. The 1911 census has the Gates family living at 249 Runcorn Road, Barnton. Head of the family is Hiram Ernest Gates aged 46, Engine Driver at the Chemical Manuf., Born Barnton; Alice, wife aged 34, having had 6 children, 5 still living with 3 at home including Edward Gates aged 23, Blacksmith Striker at the Chemical Works; Hilary, daughter aged 22, then Allen Gates aged 20, labourer at the Chemical Works, the three children born in Barnton.

Gates:- In proud and loving memory of Private Alan Gates, who died of wounds received in action July 26th 1916. We mourn for him in silence, but with no outward show, for the heart that mourns sincerely beats silently and low. Ever remembered by Ada and Ned, Ollershaw Lane, Marston.

Never a day but his name is spoken, Never an hour but he’s in our thoughts, A link in our family chain is broken, He’s gone from our home but not from our hearts, sadly missed by his sorrowing Mother, Father, Sisters and Brother. 249 Runcorn Road, Barnton.

B. M. & Co. R.o.H. Booklet, at the Winnington Works records Peter Allen Gates, Pte., with the 17th East Lancs and that he had died and with that is named on the Winnington Works Memorial. He is also named in the the 50th Anniversary Book, 1873-1923.
