Charles Llewellyn's Story.

Weaverham St. Mary’s main “Fallen” Memorial records a Kyffin C. Ll., Pte. He is also named on St. Mary’s church “Fallen” Memorial, but this lad is not listed on St. Mary’s R.o.H.

Charles Llewellyn Kyffin (I understand that Kyffin is pronounced Cuffin.) Charles Llewellyn was born in March 1876 in Wrexham. The 1911 census shows him living with his family in Wrexham, he was a collier. He enlisted at Gresford, Denbighshire. His connection to Weaverham and Acton Bridge would appear to come through his wife, Sarah Ellen Stubbs. Their Marriage Certificate confirms the marriage on the 12th (Wednesday) January 1916. The certificate states the marriage was conducted at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Acton, this would be the village Methodist Chapel, Acton Bridge. Charles Llewellyn had enlisted by then as his profession is recorded as Private in the 4th Battalion R.W.F., ex collier, living at Daisy Bank, Rhosdu (or Rhosddu) near Wrexham. Sarah Ellen lived with her family at Dutton Locks where her father, Thomas Stubbs, was the Lock Keeper. In September 1916 they had a child, Cyril. Would Charles Llewellyn have had the opportunity to see his son? It is recorded he was killed in action on the 27th July 1917 whilst fighting in the Western European Theatre, France and Flanders. The 1921 census records Sarah and Cyril living with her father at Dutton Locks.
