John William's Story.

John William (Jack) was born in 1894, eldest son of Sergeant Major & Mrs Jones of Rushgreen, Lymm.  He attended Oughtrington School and worshipped at Oughtrington Church and in civilian life he was employed as a Fireman at Partington Paper Mill.

He enlisted at the outbreak of war and was drafted to France in early February 1915.   He was invalided back to England in August of the same year suffering from the effects of gas.  After spending time in hospital he made a good recovery and was posted back to the front 5 months later in January 1916.  It was whilst he was recuperating in England that he married Alice Jones of Hensham Lane, Dunham Massey.

He was from a very patriotic family, his father was Sergeant Major of the Royal North Lancashire Regiment his younger brother Alex served with the Cheshires and the ASC, another brother James also served with the Cheshires.

He died from wound at No 1 Clearing Station on 25th January 1917.

A sister in charge of the clearing station wrote to Jaciks mother to say#
"I am very sorry to tell you that Private Jack Jones, Cheshire Regient, died at about 8 p.m. on the 24th January.  I am so grieved that we could not save him for you.  Everything possible was done for him and he had every care and attention we could give him during the short time he was with us."
