Birkenhead News 17 October 1917Lieut. SWEENEY KILLED BY A SHELL.
The many friends of Lieut. Gilbert Martin Sweeney, of 120, Woodchurch Lane, will learn with great regret of his death in France. The young officer was killed instantaneously by a shell which struck his heart. He was educated at Ashford House and at the outbreak of war he joined the Cheshire Regt. as a private and received his commission in July, 1916. He was only 22 years of age, and was on the staff of the British West African Bank. Lieut. Sweeney was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Sweeney, of 120, Woodchurch Lane. They have received over a hundred letters of sympathy during the last few days, as the young lieutenant was very popular, all of which they have not been able to answer. Deep sympathy will be extended to the bereaved parents.
