John's Story.
John Barnes was born in Tabley, Cheshire in 1898, one of six children born to William (a blacksmith) and Mary Hannah Barnes of Mere, Knutsford.
John joined the army and became Private no. 15669 of the 1st Battalion, Cheshire Regiment in September 1914 at the age of 16 – a soldier had to be 19 years of age to serve abroad, but he went, arriving on the Western Front in early 1915.
John was killed in action on the 5th October 1917.
