Birkenhead News  24 November 1917

Death of North End Wireless Operator.

Official news has been received by Mrs. Kelly, of Longford House, Laird Street, that her younger son, Wireless Operator John Joseph Kelly, was lost on October 19th through the sinking of H.M.T. _ by enemy action on the high seas, when there were no survivors. The deceased operator was educated at St. Francis Xavier’s College, Liverpool, and also at Ushaw College, Durham. He afterwards studied at the Liverpool Wireless College, and was appointed in September, 1916, to the Laconia, being transferred to another vessel before the former was sunk. The ship H.M.T. _ on which the deceased met his death was the third vessel on which he served, the second also having recently been sunk. Wireless Operator Kelly was very well known in the town, and his death will be deeply regretted by all who knew him.
