Mrs. Highfield, of 21, Salisbury Drive, New Ferry, has received the sad intelligence of the death of her husband, Mr. Fred Highfield, which occurred on March 22nd. Mr. Highfield was third engineer on board a ship that was torpedoed by and enemy submarine whilst homeward bound. A sad feature is that a letter was received from him on the day he was due to arrive in port. Mr. Highfield, who was a native of New Ferry, was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Highfield, of the Cleveland Arms Hotel, Bebington Road, well-known and respected residents. He was apprenticed to Messrs. Cammell Laird’s, and had worked for them up to last August, and his death at the age of 28 years has come with deep regret to his many friends and workmates, with whom he was so popular. He leaves a widow and one child. Another son of Mr. and Mrs. Highfield id also in the Mercantile Marine, and is presently away.
