Birkenhead News  11 November 1916

“Another St. Anne’s Old Boy”

 Falls in Battle.

We have received the sad news that Pte. F. A. Bownas, only son of Mrs. Bownas, of 13, Marshall Street, Birkenhead, has been killed in action. Previous to the war Pte. Bownas was employed in the Birkenhead Brewery, which he left at the age of 17 to join the Army at the outbreak of war. Pte. Bownas met his death whilst gallantly defending a trench which his battalion had that morning taken from the Germans. His captain speaks very highly of him, and says “He was a brave and fearless comrade, and his cheerfulness made him loved and respected by all his comrades.”

He was an old St. Anne’s school boy, and belonged to the St. Anne’s Boys’ Club.
