Joseph's Story.

Joseph Chapman was born in Knutsford on the 27th November 1898. He was one of five children who resided with his widowed mother, Elizabeth, at 14, Gannon Square, before the family moved to 8, Silk Mill Street, Knutsford.

On leaving school he was employed at the soap works in Plumley, Cheshire as a labourer.

His service records still exist so we know he enlisted in the army in 1916 and was with the 65th Training Reserve Regiment then in January 1918 he was called into the 13th Battalion of the Welsh Regiment, becoming Private no. 63670. His service record makes reference to the poor state of his teeth.

He went to France, arriving on the 11th January 1918.

Joseph died of wounds on the 8th October 1918 at the 2nd Northumberland Field Ambulance.
