John's Story.
Dukinfield Gunner
Up to the last laid his gun with coolness and accuracy.
Mrs Shaw, of Old Hall, Dukinfield Hall, has received news of the death in action of her youngest son, Gunner John Shaw, Royal Garrison Artillery, in France.
An officer writes that Gunner Shaw was a favourite with both officers and men, and they all shared in the grief at his loss. Up to the last he was laying his gun with great coolness and accuracy, as he had always done in spite of harassing shelling in the very close vicinity of his gun.
Gunner Shaw was 24 years of age. He joined the colours on the 21 May 1916, and went to France last November. His occupation in civil life was that of a goods clerk at the Tudor Accumulator Works. He was connected from boyhood with the Dukinfield Hall Day and Sunday School and was an ardent worker in all the activities of the church and school. He was a young man of cheerful and kindly disposition, and his death has created deep regret amongst all who knew him.
A brother, Lance Corporal, A. Shaw is with the 2/9 Manchesters in France.
