ANOTHER BIRKENHEAD MAN FALLS
Yet another name has been added to Birkenhead’s roll of honour. It is that of Corporal Joseph Flowers, who formerly resided at 148 Beckwith Street with his wife and two children. The deceased, who was only 21 years of age, joined the Cheshire’s on May 29th, 1915 and was sent to France in January 1917. Later he was transferred to the Royal West Kent’s in which regiment he served until the 27th August 1918, when he was killed instantaneously by a bursting shell. The officer commanding his section stated in a letter of sympathy to Mrs Flowers “I had known him for some time and his was going to be promoted to sergeant. He was very popular both with officers and men, and it will be very hard to replace him.”
