Herbert Thomas's Story.

Herbert Thomas Whitby was the son of Captain Whitby of the tug boat Mode Wheel. 
He joined the Navy a year prior to his death, and was nearly 19 when he was lost at sea on December 12th 1917. 
He was the former Deck hand on the tug Irlam and had been employed by the Manchester Ship Canal Company. 
He lived at 43 Irwell Lane, Runcorn.

On January 18 1918 this small article appeared in the Runcorn Weekly News, giving the incorrect date of Herbert's death.
