James J's Story.
Birkenhead News 05 December 1917TRANMERE SOLDIER FALLS.
The news of the death in action in France on the 12th ult. of Private James Shepherd has been received by his father, Mr. Thomas Shepherd, 20, Apple Grove, Well Lane, Tranmere. A letter of sympathy has been received from his commanding officer stating that his death was caused by a machine gun bullet at the very moment when he was being relieved. It was sheer bad luck to be killed at such a time and just by a stray bullet.
Pte. Shepherd, who was educated at Well Lane School, and afterwards worked for the Buxton Lime Co., enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters 2 ½ years ago. He was 23 years of age. Mr. Shepherd’s other two sons enlisted, one in the Navy and one in the Army, the one who joined the Army having been discharged.
