Harry's Story.
Harry Prophett (sometimes recorded as Profit) was born in Sandbach, on 5th April 1891, the third son of Harry and Betsy Prophett of Union Street, Sandbach and Bank Street, Crewe. In 1901, Harry was living in Union Street, next to the Catholic Chapel, with his father, and brothers William and Thomas. By 1906, aged 15, he had been taken on by LNWR in Crewe.
Harry enlisted at Nantwich as Private 9473 of the 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment, and was sent to France (Le Havre) on January 16, 1915. Four months later, he was taken prisoner at Ypres on May 8, 1915 and died of fever on 30th July 1915 while working as a farm hand in Germany (Linburg A Lehn). He was 24. He is buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Germany.
