John's Story.
Birkenhead News 16 December 1916Ex-Naval Man Killed in Action.
“A Keen Enthusiastic Worker.”
Mrs. Lowe of 83, Beckwith Street, has received the grievous intelligence that her husband, Lance-Corporal John Lowe, has been killed in action. The deceased soldier was for nine years in the Navy, and after that was employed by Messrs. Grayson and Co., Ltd. He joined the Cheshire Regiment at the outbreak of war, and had been in France for one year and nine months.
His widow had received from Lieut. A. H. Legh, the O.C. the Company, the following letter :- “I am deeply grieved to have to confirm the death of your dear husband. He was one of the best men in the sniping section that I have ever had. Always a keen, enthusiastic worker, taking a deep interest in his work, and the men under him, his comrades were all very fond of him, and we shall miss him sorely. He was caught suddenly by a bomb from a German trench mortar, when he was on his way down the trench. He had no time to take cover or throw himself to the ground. The stretcher bearers carried him up to the dressing station, where the doctor – an excellent man – did everything in his power, but from the first it was hopeless, and your husband passed away without pain a few hours later.”
Mrs. Lowe is left with five children.
