Birkenhead News 02 May 1917YOUNG SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION.
Lance-Corporal A. Humphreys.
The official intimation has been received by Mrs. Saunders, 230, Conway Street, that her eldest son, Lance-Corporal A. Humphreys, has been killed in action on April 11th. Prior to joining the colours he was an employee of the National Telephone Co. Soon after the declaration of war he enlisted voluntarily, and was attached to the Denbighshire Hussars Yeomanry. After a while he was transferred to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers (Machine Gun Section). Lance-Corporal Humphreys was an enthusiastic member of the Birkenhead Protestant Reformed Church, and on Sunday evening, April 29th, Mr. T. Major Thompson conducted a touching service to the dead soldier’s memory.
Deceased was very popular, and attended his church and Sunday school with unfailing regularity. Every sympathy will be extended to the bereaved mother and the relatives of this gallant young soldier who had just attained his 20th year. He was an old boy of St. John’s School.
