ROBERT HARROP 

Robert Harrop is remembered on the Christ Church Memorial Barnton and that he served with the Canadian Forces.

C.W.G.C. remember a Robert Harrop, Pte. Service No 2591316, with the 20th Bn. Canadian Infantry, Died 11th October 1918 aged 20, at the Niagara Cemetery IWUY (A.39.) France. Son of John and Lucy Harrop of 1414, Davenport Rd. Toronto, Ontario.

A Robert Harrop was found with the Canadian Forces Records living at 335 Brook Ave., Toronto, Canada, born in Cheshire. His date of birth was September 14th 1898, his calling was Chauffeur and he was single. His age at enlisting was 19 years and 2 months, he stood 5ft 5.5inch; Complexion Fair; Eyes Blue; Hair Dark Brown; his religion was Methodist. Enlisting date was 10th November 1917. Regimental No 2591316. Next of kin, Jack Harrop, Father. He arrived back in England on the 3th March 1918, it is recorded he was K.i.A.

Cheshirebmd record the birth of Robert Harrop in 1897 in Weaverham. The 1911 census this Harrop family living at 39 Nursery Road, Northwich. John head of the family aged 42, Greengrocer; Lucy aged 40, having had 11 children with 10 surviving and 9 still at home, including Robert aged 13 at school. Robert being the eldest lad on the 1911 census. There is a second lad named Jack who was 9 in 1911 who may just have been of an age to have served. Having said that no records found.

Canada has a book of Remembrance for its WW1 “Fallen,” Robert is named on page 424 which is viewable on line, searching under Canadian Book of Remembrance for WW1.

Northwich Guardian 29th November 1918. ROLL OF HONOUR, KILLED, PRIVATE ROBERT HARROP

Private Robert Harrop, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Harrop, formerly of Barnton, who emigrated to Canada two years before the war, has been killed in action. The news was conveyed to his aunt, Mrs. Crompton, of Canal Side Barnton, in a letter from the father of the deceased, who stated that Private Harrop was killed on October 11th. Private Harrop, who was educated at Brunner Schools, Barnton, was 21 years of age and had been at the front only about a month. At one time his father was in business as a greengrocer in Nursery Road but is now a concrete contractor in Toronto, where his son assisted him. Private Harrop belonged to the Canadian Scottish and at an early age, he enlisted the day following the outbreak of war. His father obtained his release but he again joined up a few months later. (WW1 age of enlisting for Canada was 18.) Being still under age he was discharged but on reaching military age he joined the Canadian contingent and spent some months training in England
