Birkenhead News 25 October 1916“Never Got Downhearted”
Exmouth Street Soldier Killed
Mrs. Reynolds, of 97, Exmouth Street, Birkenhead, has been the recipient of the sorrowful intelligence that her son, Pte. Ernest Reynolds, of the Cheshires, was killed in action on the afternoon of Oct. 9th by a German sniper. Reynolds was but 23 years of age. He was educated at St. Peter’s School, Birkenhead, and prior to enlistment was in the employ of Messrs. Vernon and Sons, millers, Seacombe. The deceased’s Company-Quartermaster-Sergt., in a letter to the bereaved mother, who is a widow, says her son was hit in the head and did not suffer at all, adding:- “He was a very good soldier and never grumbled or got down-hearted when surroundings were unpleasant . . He died at his post doing his duty bravely for England and what England stands for.” A chum of the deceased, Pte. J. F. Roberts, of the Machine Gun Section of the Cheshires, also has written to Mrs. Reynolds and said that her son died doing his duty as only a good and upright soldier could do. All his friends would miss him greatly.
