Birkenhead News  20 April 1918

THE LATE LIEUT. V. JAMES

The regrettable news has been received by his parents that Lieut. H Vernon James, R.F.A., only son of Mr. W. H. James and Mrs. James of 108, Whetstone Lane, Birkenhead, has died of wounds received in action. The late officer served in the Denbighshire Hussars Yeomanry for eight years prior to the outbreak of war, and subsequently received a commission in the R.F.A. In December 1916, he proceeded to France and went through several big engagements. Aged but 31 years, Lieut. James was educated at the Birkenhead Institute and Denstone College, Staffordshire. Later he joined the staff of the State Insurance Co., Liverpool. Always a keen sportsman the deceased was at one period a popular member of the Birkenhead Park Football Club, and later on played for Liverpool Old Boys.
