Birkenhead News  09 January 1918

DIED FROM WOUNDS.

The most sincere sympathy goes out to Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Samuelson, of 17, Drummond Road, Hoylake, in the loss of their only child, Captain W. Denys Samuelson, who died in France on the last day of the old year from wounds received in action. Captain Samuelson, who was a grandson of Mr. James Samuelson, of Sidmouth, (formerly of Trevanna, Grosvenor Road, Claughton) joined the Liverpool University Detachment of the Lancashire Fortress Royal Engineers (Territorials) as sapper at the outbreak of war, and was stationed at Bunrana, Lough Swilly, North of Ireland. Since then Mr. W. D. Samuelson, although only 21 years of age, had a varied and active career, quickly being promoted to captain. He unfortunately was wounded whilst in action, and died on Dec. 31st at the base. Captain W. D. Samuelson was educated at Shrewsbury School. Much sympathy will be extended not only to Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Samuelson in their great loss, but also to Mr. James Samuelson, Bath House, Sidmouth, in the loss of his dearly loved grandson. Mr. James Samuelson has been for some time and still is very ill, his friends in attendance upon him being gravely concerned about his condition on Christmas Day. The latest news, however, states that the invalid’s condition is greatly improved.
