Arthur's Story.

Born in Whitchurch in 1898 Died 5 December 1956. Age 58. Arthur was  the son of William and Elizabeth Bradley.
In 1901 Arthur age 3 lived with his parents and siblings, Edward (10), Mary (9), Samuel (8) and Ethel (5) at 14 Bowling Green, Crewe and then by 1911 the family had moved to 18 Liverpool Terrace.
 
Arthur enlisted into the Cheshire Regiment his service number being 2838.



Later he was promoted to 290790 Corporal Arthur Bradley. He was discharged to a commission in the Cheshire Regiment 14 October 1917. 


 
 
Arthur served in the 7th Battalion Cheshire Regiment
1/7th Battalion
August 1914 : in Macclesfield. Part of Cheshire Brigade, Welsh Division.
Moved immediately on mobilisation to Shrewsbury and Church Stretton but by the end of August 1914 had moved to Northampton. In December 1914 moved again to Cambridge and by March 1915 was at Bedford.
13 May 1915 : formation became 159th Brigade, 53rd (Welsh) Division.
Sailed in July 1915 from Devonport, going via Alexandria to Gallipoli where it landed on 9 August 1915.
December 1915 : withdrawn from Gallipoli and moved to Egypt.
31 May 1918 : left the Division and moved to France.
1 July 1918 : attached to 102nd Brigade in 34th Division.

Arthur was taken prisoner of war, later an investigation the Army Council concluded that no blame could be attached to Arthur.



On his return to home, like many more men who had been prisoners they recieved a letter from the King.




 
After the war, Arthur was a branch manager for the Crewe Co-operative Society, he worked for them in total for for forty years. He was chairman of the Branch Managers Association; he was also a member of the Four Cardinal Virtues Lodge of Freemasons. Arthur’s health began to fail in 1954 he died December 5th, 1956, age 58.
