John W's Story.
In 1911 John lived with his mother and another brother, Percy at 20 Harding Street, Crewe. The census shows that his mother was a widow and that she had 12 children of which sadly seven had died. John is listed age 17 and working as a forge labourer for the LNWR.
John’s bravery in the field was recognised three times during the conflict he was twice awarded the Military Medal (M.M.) and in October 1918 he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (D.C.M.)

For conspicuous gallantry during operations 23rd October 1918, Le Cateau. He was in charge of a brigade report centre situated in the village that was continuously shelled. It was entirely due to his energy and fine example to those with him under heavy shelling that communication was maintained. Throughout the operations his work has been of the highest order.
