Birkenhead News  16 October 1915

Died of Dysentry.

AN ONLY SON.

News has just been received of the death from dysentery of Able Seaman Thos. John Edge R.N.V.R. (Mersey Battalion) on the 24th Sept. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Edge, of 23 Edgar Street, Birkenhead, was 23 years of age, and had been in the R.N.V.R for about three years. He was called up at the commencement of the war, and took part in the siege of Antwerp and was wounded (shot through the left wrist) on May 21st in the Dardanelles. Deceased was bred and born in Birkenhead and attended Cathcart Street Council School, afterwards being employed at Messrs. Cammel Laird’s.

He wrote several cheerful letters home in one of which he said he was sorry to see the photos of McDonald and Donnelly as killed in action in the “News,” the regular copy of which he appreciated. The following message of sympathy has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Edge, signed by Mr. A. J. Balfour: “The King commands me to assure you of the true sympathy of his Majesty and the Queen in your sorrow.”
