Arthur's Story.
Arthur Bancroft served with the 18th battalion Manchester Regiment; he went to France 18 November 1915.

The inhabitants of Wilmslow turned out on Saturday night in thousands to honour Private A. Bancroft, of the 18th Manchester’s who is the first Wilmslow man to win the D.C.M. An imposing procession was formed, after which a presentation took place in the Drill Hall, where the hero received about £70 (including Exchequer Bonds of the value of £50), a clock, and a framed testimonial from the Urban Council.

For conspicuous gallantry during an enemy bombardment. He helped to dig out five men from a blown-in dug-out under very heavy fire. During fifty-five minutes 107 heavy HE shells fell close to them as they were digging.
