Birkenhead News  2 October 1915

THE TRAGEDY OF WAR.

Sister’s Twelve-Months Suspense.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE “NEWS.”

Sir, - I would be glad if you could allow me space in your valuable paper for the following.

The enclosed photo is of Private R. Felthouse, of the 11th Hussars. He went to the front with his regiment on the outbreak of the war. He was reported missing since 4th September, 1914. News has now been received by his sister, Mrs. Bird, late of 3, Curzon Avenue, Birkenhead, from the War Office, stating that according to a German list just received by them through the American Embassy, her brother was buried at Honnechy on August 27, 1914. Thus after over twelve months’ suspense she has just got to know.

He was a native of Birkenhead, educated at Oxton School, and he had been employed for some time by Messrs. Williams Bros., and later at the Glegg Arms, Gayton. He was well known in Birkenhead, and had a very large number of friends who were very anxious about him; so by publishing this you will satisfy them and do me a great favour. Thanking you in anticipation.

Yours etc.,   J Bird. 56, Poulton Road, Seacombe.     30 September 1915
