Thomas's Story.
Birkenhead News 22 July 1916Bromboro’ Pool Patriot Loses his Life.
Officer’s Tribute.
Inhabitants of Bromborough Pool and district will regret to learn of the death in action of Corporal Thomas Jones, South Lancs. Regt. The deceased soldier was for 17 years an employee at Messrs. Price’s Candle Works, and enlisted in September, 1914. One of the most popular young fellows in the village, he was better known as “Leno,” from his unfailing good humour. A letter has been received by his parents, who reside at 10, York Street, Bromborough Pool, from his officer, who writes :- “I should like to express to you my sincere sympathy in your great sorrow. Your son was a splendid soldier. He was the sort of man who could always be cheerful. I remember him particularly two days before his death cheering us all up with his rhymes and songs, when we were all gloomy, wet and tired after a long march. I knew him only for a short time, but he was liked and respected by all who knew him. He was killed by a sniper during an advance across the open. Death was quite instantaneous.”
