Birkenhead News 19th July 1915New Ferry Soldier Killed
Within a Few Days of his Birthday
Official intimation has been received by Mr. and Mrs. F. Jones, of 13 Legh Road, New Ferry, that their son, Private Henry Jones, of the 1st Cheshire Regiment was killed in action on the 23rd June. Private Jones, who on the 2nd July would have attained his 22nd birthday, joined the Army four years ago and went to the front early in January. He had taken part in most of the heavy fighting since then. Beside the War Office intimation of this young man’s death a letter has been received by his parents from Sergeant A. Cole, of the 1st Cheshire Regiment, who expresses his sympathy and that of the company with the bereaved parents, and says that the loss of Private Jones is deeply felt by his comrades, the more so that he had done so much good for the wounded since he became a stretcher-bearer.
When at home Private Jones was employed by his father as a carter, and his death is a sad blow to a large number of friends and fellow-workers.
