John William Haig's Story.
John William Haig Lanyon (1928-1952), known to his family as ‘Bill’, was born on 14th December 1928 at Newfield Hall, Minshull Vernon, near Nantwich, Cheshire. He was the eldest son of John Arthur Lanyon (1900-1976) and Nancy Eleanor Haig Mitchell (1901-1974). At the outbreak of WW2, when he was ten, the family was living on Old Road, Tarvin. His home address by 1952 was Earlscroft, Kelsall.

"Bill" attended Shrewsbury School before going to Sandhurst. He was a Lieutenant (service number: P/407938) in the 1st Battalion King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. He was killed on 26th July 1952 in Korea and buried at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery Tanggok, Busan, South Korea.

He is commemorated on the Kelsall War Memorial, near Tarporley in Cheshire.
