All Doing There Bit

Mr. and Mrs. H. Cuming, of 35, York Road, Seacombe, have received official notification of the death in action of their eldest son, Pte. William Cuming, of the Canadian Contingent. A few days ago they had a letter from the commanding officer, who said:- "It is with the deepest sympathy and sincere regret that I have to inform you of the death of your son, Pte. W. Cuming. He was killed in the attack made by his battalion on the 26th. His death was almost instantaneous, and he is greatly missed by us all."

Pte. Cuming was born in Cork and resided for many years in Swansea, where he was the champion boy swimmer at the age of 16. He went out to Canada when only 18 years of age, taking up a position in Edmonton. Joining the Canadian forces, he underwent twelve months' training before being sent to England. He came over with the rank of corporal of corporal but was reduced to private for service in the trenches. He was a man of fine physique, standing 6ft. 1in. He was serving on a Lewis machine gun and had only been in France for about three months.

The second son of Mrs. Cuming is serving in the R.N.V.R. on a minesweeper, while the third is an apprentice on an ocean-going vessel. The father, Mr. Bernard Cuming, is working on munitions and is a member of the Liverpool Volunteers.
