Thomas's Story.
Thomas was born in New Ferry, Cheshire on the 6th march 1884. He lived with his father William, a labourer, & his mother Elizabeth at 18 Howell Road, Bebington. He had 3 brothers, William, John & Arthur & 4 sisters, Edith, Margaret, Mary & jane. By 1911 they were living at 15 Woodhead Street, New Ferry. Thomas was an engineer's labourer. He enlisted in Birkenhead. He had previously served in the South Africa War & spent 7 years in India. He obtianed his discharge & joined the reserve. He was mobilized on the 5th August 1914. He was killed in an explosion from a trench mortar. His captain wrote to his parents: "You son was a real help to the company. He was a good man, hard working & conscientious, & personally I feel his loss very deeply, as he was a man who happened to come under my notice as a man who knew his job & did it well."
