Thomas's Story.
Birkenhead News 06 October 1915“FOURTH” PRIVATE KILLED.
Holy Trinity Old Boy.
Official intimation has been received by Mrs. Penderghast, who resides at 9, George Street, Birkenhead, of the death in action of Private T. Penderghast, of the 4th Cheshire Regiment. Private Penderghast, who was only 23, enlisted soon after the outbreak of war, and left for the front with the first detachment of his regiment. Only one letter was received from him, and in it he stated that he had been in the trenches for a week, and was feeling all right. The news naturally came as a great blow to the mother, who is now dependant on an elder son, who has tried several times to enlist, having been rejected as medically unfit. Private Penderghast is an old boy of Holy Trinity School, and was very well known in that part of town.
The above article reports Thomas’ name as Penderghast, however the correct spelling is Penderghest as per official records.
