Birkenhead News  August 1943

Killed in Sicily.

One of the first local casualties reported in the Sicilian campaign is Sergeant Harold Newton, of 15, Colwyn Street, Birkenhead, who died of wounds received only a few days after the landing.

Sergeant Newton was a member of the Territorial Army, and was mobilised at the outbreak of war in the Cameron Highlanders. He was later drafted to the Seaforth Highlanders and went abroad in October, 1942.

Educated at Laird Street School, Sergeant Newton, who was 27, worked before in a West Kirby grocer’s shop.
