At the time of his enlistment he had changed jobs and was now working as a labourer at Brunner Mond chemical works in Lostock.
Also, by that time his family had moved to Crossfields, Aston by Budworth, Cheshire.
He enlisted in the army in June 1918, becoming Private 78622 of the 3rd Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment. He spent the whole time up until the armistice in training in the U.K.
Sometime in early-December 1918 he became ill and he was diagnosed with influenza and was admitted to the West Hartlepool Military Hospital, where he died on the 19th December 1918.
