Henry's Story.
Henry was the son of John & Mary Salt and was born in the parish of St Thomas's C of E Church, Stockport. He was married to Gertrude and they lived at 2 Thomas Street, Hillgate, with their 5 children. Henry's service number indicates he volunteered for the army in August 1914 - just after war was declared. He is, probably, the Harry Salt who is commemorated on a Memorial to those who worked for the Midland Railway Company at the locomotive depot in Heaton Mersey. The Memorial is now at the Railway Club in Edgeley. The Battalion had taken over front-line trenches near Carnoy on 24 September. It's War Diary entry for 1 October reads "Battalion in trenches. Enemy unusually active with sniping and light guns. Casualties O.R. 2 killed, 1 wounded." One of the two Other Ranks was Henry Salt. The other man was Augustus Carty from Wallasey.
