Alexander Murray's Story.

Alexander Murray Craigmile was the son of Dr. and Mrs Craigmile of Cluny, Manor Road, Wallasey. He was educated at The Leas, Wallasey and at Sedbergh where he received colours for cricket and football, after leaving Sedbergh he entered King’s College , Cambridge, from which he got a commission in the Rifle Brigade early in November 1914.

In October 1917, he was awarded the Military Cross, the citation states,

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his company was ordered forward to reinforce, he got into position with great ability and consolidated the position. Later he most skilfully advanced the whole line and displayed fine leadership under the most difficult conditions. He set a splendid example to his men throughout the whole operation.

He is listed as serving with the 6th battalion but was in fact attached to the 1st battalion, on the 29th March 1918 during the German spring offensive, Alexander took a call from an a advanced position warning him that the Germans were advancing, he was ordered to counter attack  and retake the position, it was during this attack he was killed.
