Birkenhead News 30 January 1915

DEATH OF ANOTHER BIRKENHEAD ROYAL SCOT

The sad news of the death of Sergt. R. E. Griffiths who resided at 157, Vittoria Street, Birkenhead, was received by his mother on January 11th, but there has been some delay in official confirmation, owing to an error as to the initial. Sergt. Griffiths joined the engineers (Birkenhead) when he was 16 years of age, and from them enlisted in the Royal Scots, and was drafted to India after three years of home service and was there at the time of the Bombay riots, being then billeted in the streets for six weeks. He left the army after eight years’ service to come home and support his widowed mother, and was employed for the last four years by the China Steamship Co. When war broke out he was on his way home from Australia and on landing here immediately re-enlisted in his old regiment and was promoted to be Sergeant, and drafted to France in November. He was killed in action on December 14th at a place called Bois near Kimmel. He will be greatly missed by his mother and family, and by a very large circle of friends.
