Frank's Story.

Frank Armstrong was killed in action on 23rd April 1917, at the Battle of Arras, during the second battle of the Scarpe. He was 21 years old.

Frank was born in Tiverton, the son of Frank and Alice Armstrong, who later moved to 54 Richard Street, Crewe. Frank junior worked as a trimmer at the Crewe Works. He enlisted first into the Kings Liverpool Regimenta (regimental number 34331) before joining the 8th Battalion, East Lancs Regiment. He is remembered on a memorial at Tiverton, and also on a plaque at the Heritage Centre in Crewe. The plaque was originally installed at the Wedgwood Methodist Chapel in Heath Street, Crewe, but after the closure of the church in 1969, it was misplaced. It was re-discovered in 2004, and transferred to Hightown Methodist Church where it was displayed until 2010. It was then placed in the Heritage Centre, where it was still on display in July 2025.
