NEW FERRY FAMILY’S FURTHER LOSS.

Another south-end family have just been bereaved of another son killed in action. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wood, of 37, Grove Street, New Ferry, have received word that their youngest son, Private Harry Wood, Lancashire Fusiliers, was killed in action on June 6th. In a letter received from the soldier’s Officer, he states that the platoon was doing duty at the time and a shell came over and killed two and wounded two. “I regret to say that your son was one of the two killed, and he died instantly. He was buried the next morning with full honours, and his comrades attended the last rites. He was a brave soldier, and died as many more have for his country. We all deplore his death for he was such a good fellow and a brave lad.”

He was 20 years of age, and prior to joining up with the King’s Liverpool Regiment, was employed by Messrs. Price’s Candle Co. He had been previously wounded whilst serving with the King’s, and was sent to the Wallasey Town Hall Hospital. He was particularly well-known and respected, and attended St. John’s School, and was a prominent member of the football club of that name. His eldest brother, Pte. Thomas Wood, of the 13th Cheshire Regiment (Wirral Pals) was killed in action in May, 1916. Their last surviving son, James is at present in France with the West Yorkshire Regt., doing his bit. The deepest sympathy will be extended to this well-known family in the great loss that has befallen them.
