Edwin's Story.
Hannah Claye and Edwin Wolstencroft had married at St Peter's Church, Prestbury in the early months of 1889. Their second son, Tom, had died in 1912, aged 20. Their eldest, John, had also died in about 1915. Very little is known about Edwin's life except that he had been born in Cheadle and, before enlisting in the army, worked for the accountancy firm of Parkinson, Mather & Co, in Manchester. It's not known when Edwin went on active service, but it was probably not many weeks before he was killed. On 24 July, the Battalion was relieved to a rest camp at Meaulte, a small village two and half miles south of the town of Albert. They stayed there until 18 August. On that day, they were ordered forward to support another Battalion in an attack on a German position at Maltzhorn Farm. The 10th Royal Welsh Fusiliers captured the position, known to the British as Lonely Trench. The KSLI moved up behind them to consolidate and secure the position. Edwin was one of 41 men from the Battalion, killed in the attack. Two other local Stockport men, William Taylor and Arthur Sayer, were also killed.
