Born Ince, enlisted Wigan. His wife resided at 101, Cemetery Road, Crewe and he was the third son of Mr Sam Stockton of Spring Gardens, Nantwich. Before the war had been employed as an overlooker at a Wigan colliery. Landed at Gallipoli on May 6, 1915. His citation for the DCM read: ‘For conspicuous gallantry on the 4th and 6th of June on the Gallipoli peninsular. On the 4th June he attacked and captured single-handed, four Turks including one officer. On June 6th during a hostile counter- attack, he most gallantly led a party of bomb throwers and drove the Turks out of the strong redoubt, subsequently establishing communication under heavy fire.’ He was an expert bomb-thrower and was with such a party when killed.
