Birkenhead News 28 February 1917

First Birkenhead M.M.

Fatally Injured by a Shell.

Mrs. Larson of 55, Upper Beckwith Street, has received the sad news of the death in action of her son, Pte. Herbert Stewart, who joined the South Lancashire Regiment at the outbreak of war. He had been out in France for 18 months, and was hit by a shell, sustaining wounds which resulted in his death on February. Pte. Stewart won the Military Medal in June, and was the first Birkenhead recipient of that distinction. In a letter received from his officer that gentleman speaks of Pte. Stewart as a “good fellow and one of his best men.” Mrs. Larson has three other sons in the Army. We sympathise greatly with her in her sad loss.
