JAMES EDWARD STAMPER 

Born Crewe, July 6, 1893 and was a rivetter before enlisting on January

9, 1914. His mother Elizabeth resided at 4, Brook Street, Crewe. He joined

the Monmouth on July 30, 1914. At Coronel, the Monmouth was sunk after

being fired upon by the German armoured cruisers Scharnhorst and

Gneisnau and was then finished off by the light cruiser Nürnberg.

There were no survivors from a ship’s complement of 678.
