Birkenhead News  04 August 1917
LANCE-CORPORAL J. H. ROBERTS.

Long Missing, Presumed Killed.

In the “Birkenhead News” of November 1st last it was announced that Lance-Corporal John Hugh Roberts, of the Cheshire Regt., had been reported missing since the preceding October 8th. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Roberts, of 16, Wellesley Street, Birkenhead, have now received intimation from the Record Office that their son is presumed to be dead. Sympathy will be extended to them on this intelligence. For about 27 years Mr. George Roberts has been in the employ of the Mersey Railway Co., and his young son, now believed to have “gone under” in his country’s service, went into the office of the same company after leaving Laird Street School. He joined up on January 21st, 1916, was drafted to France on September 7th following, and had not been home on leave since. It was in the field of action that he passed his 21st birthday on November 9th last. A host of friends will hear with regret of the passing of a brave young soldier of the King.
